A green roof, or living roof, is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. It may also include additional layers such as a root barrier and drainage and irrigation systems – Wikipedia.
Green roofs are installed on top of the flat roofs of buildings. They make an unusable area into a beautiful living space, adding value to residential and commercial buildings. What
once was just a roof is now a green area to relax in. Green roof systems have been popular in Europe for some time and are now gaining popularity here in the states. Green roofs actually last longer than traditional roofs. They also absorb rain water and insulate the roof form the heat and cold. Depending on the strength of your roof, you can create what is referred to as an intensive roof with a foot or more of soil. With and intensive roof you can plant a wide variety of shrubs, bushes and even trees, turning your roof into a park or a roof garden. An extensive roof is much lighter as they are built with just enough soil to maintain ground cover and flowers. We will always have an engineer determine the maximum load your roof can bear before designing your green roof. Either type of roof will increase the value of your building while giving you additional square footage to enjoy.
